Danube - Regensburg to Passau Cycling Break

An easy cycling break following the young Danube through scenic, lower Bavaria to Passau, the city of three rivers on the Austrian border. Relaxed cycling through quaint riverside villages and Baroque towns. Level cycle paths and quiet roads characterise this very pleasant route in a beautiful corner of Germany.

This is a fertile region dotted with some great towns and villages. On this route you’ll immerse yourself in Bavarian culture and have plenty of opportunities to sample the region’s hearty local cuisine and world-famous beers.

Straubing

Along the way you’ll stay in the World Heritage city of Regensburg and the old, Baroque town of Straubing. You’ll also spend a night in charming Hengersberg before reaching Passau – the ‘city of three rivers’ where the Danube meets the Ilz and Inn.

This is a leisurely tour that covers around 100 miles in total over three full days of cycling. The majority of the route is on flat, smooth and traffic-free cycle paths along the banks of the Danube, so anyone with a basic level of fitness can enjoy this trip.

Danube - Regensburg to Passau Cycling Break

Day 1 : Arrive Regensburg

On arrival in Regensburg make your way to your hotel, after which you are free to relax or explore this Bavarian city at the confluence of the River Regen and the Danube. Its large medieval core is a World Heritage Site.

Day 2 : Regensburg – Straubing
34 miles/55 kms

Leaving Regensburg you’ll start your tour by crossing the Nibelungen Bridge to join the ‘Tour de Baroque’ cycle route. A very enjoyable ride beside the river delivers you to Donaustauf, famous as the site of the Walhalla – a hilltop reproduction of the Parthenon. More easy cycling beside the Danube brings you to the charming town of Straubing, with its picturesque main square

Day 3 : Straubing – Deggendorf
25 miles/40 kms

Today you'll continue along the peaceful Danube Valley, first to to Bogen at the foot of the vertiginous Bogenberg Mountain and then along the idyllic riverside cycle path to Metten with its impressive old abbey. A few kilometres further on you reach Deggendorf the gateway to the Bavarian Forest. You'll spend the night in this pleasant Bavarian town.

Day 4 : Deggendorf – Passau
34 miles/ 55 kms

Today’s ride takes you through the pretty little village of Winzer before arriving at the baroque town of Vilshofen with its cathedral and historical centre. Continue cycling, following the Danube before you finally arrive in Passau, the ‘city of three rivers’. Here the Danube meets the Ilz and Inn and you’ll enjoy exploring this beautiful old town, set on a promontory between the rivers.

Day 5 : End of trip

After breakfast it is time to head for home or your next adventure.

Bikes

Regular bikes provided are modern alloy framed models with 27 speeds. The bikes come equipped with waterproof pannier, waterproof handlebar bag, lock and pump. Per booking a repair kit is also included. Male specific bikes are available from a height of 175cm.

Electric bikes (minimum age 16 years) and bikes for teenagers are available. Child seats for adult rental bikes are also available at no extra charge.

Helmets are not provided and we therefore recommend bringing your own.

Local taxes: Some hotels have started to charge a local/tourist tax. These taxes are not included in the sale price of the tour and must be paid directly by you at check-in or checkout at the hotels. The fee varies and is frequently changing but as a guide, you may be asked to pay between €1-€4 per person per night.

Getting there

Fly to Munich airport and then travel by train onward to Regensburg. After the tour you can return to Munich by train from Passau.
